Bachofens „Mutterrecht“ in Thomas Manns Roman „Der Erwählte“
Der Beitrag untersucht die Bedeutung von Bachofens theoretischer Schrift „Das Mutterrecht“ für Thomas Manns „Erwählten“ und zeigt, dass zentrale Begriffe und Konzepte von Bachofens Theorie tief in Struktur, Symbolik, Erzählperspektive und -stil des Romans eingewoben sind. Die Erkenntnis über das Ausmaß der „Mutterrechts“-Rezeption eröffnet einen bis dato nur wenig untersuchten Deutungsrahmen für den „Erwählten“ und insbesondere für den in der Forschung häufig kritisch beleuchteten Begriff der Gnade im Roman.
This article examines the significance of Bachofen’s theoretical work “Das Mutterrecht” (Mother Right) for Thomas Mann’s “Der Erwählte” (The Holy Sinner) and demonstrates that key terms and concepts from Bachofen’s theory are deeply interwoven into the structure, symbolism, narrative perspective and style of the novel. Understanding the extent of the reception “Das Mutterrecht” received opens up a hitherto little-investigated interpretative framework for “Der Erwählte” and, in particular, for the concept of ‘grace’ in the novel, which researchers have frequently criticised.
