Zum Verhältnis von Reflexion und Narration in Musils „Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften“ und Brochs „Huguenau oder die Sachlichkeit“

Die Diskussion sowohl zum Roman der Moderne allgemein als auch zu den Romanen Musils und Brochs im Speziellen läuft Gefahr, den essayistischen Roman durch die Konzentration auf die Reflexionsebenen in seiner besonderen ästhetischen Struktur zu verkennen. In diesem Aufsatz wird das Essayistische nicht im reflexiven Gehalt, sondern in der wechselseitigen und poetisch in spezifischer Weise produktiven Interaktionsbewegung von Reflexion und Narration gesehen. Deren kompliziertes Verhältnis wird anhand ausgewählter Kapitel exemplarisch untersucht, um am Ende eine angemessene Bestimmung der Ästhetik des essayistischen Romans zu liefern, die konstitutiv ist für die Interpretation beider Romane.

The discussion on the modern novel in general and the novels by Musil and Broch in particular runs the risk misjudging the essayistic novel with its specific aesthetical structure due to a fixation on the reflective content. In this article the essayistic character is not examined in the reflective content of the novels, but in the reciprocal and poetically productive process of interaction between reflection and narration. The complex relationship of these two aspects is explored using selected chapters in order to establish an adequate definition of the aesthetics of the essayistic novel, which is constitutive element in the interpretation of both novels.
